Amsterdam is known for being a multicultural, liberal and free city. Freedom of speech, religion and sexuality belong to the core values of the capital of The Netherlands. The Netherlands was in 2001 the first country in the world, to accept same-sex marriage by law. Since 1996 the Amsterdam Gay Pride is an annually held festival, which has grown to an event that draws over half a million international visitors. But that said, even today it is necessary to have organizations committed to fight for the acceptance of homosexuality.
